However, 98 percent of dogs travel unrestrained in moving vehicles, leaving both pets and the passengers vulnerable to injury in the event of a traffic accident. In a 35 mile per hour collision, an unrestrained 60-pound pet becomes a 2,700 pound projectile and can do much harm to other passengers.

In collaboration with the pet-safety experts from Bark Buckle UP, Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information, has published a list of the Top 10 Pet Safe Vehicles that make driving with pets safer and more convenient.

‘It’s in everyone’s best interest for drivers to ensure that pets and their gear are safe and secure while on the road,’ said Kevin Smith, Edmunds.com’s Editorial Director. ‘The best vehicles for pet owners are the ones with plenty of room and pet safety features such as tri-climate control, fold-flat rear seats, rear back-up cameras, sliding rear doors, and side airbags.’

The top 10 2009 cars and trucks most highly recommended for safe pet travel, in alphabetical order, are:

BARK is a Political Action Committee (PAC) formed to amend the current Palm Beach County ordinance that bans dogs from county beaches and parks.With approximately 49 miles of coastline, there is no reason why just a few miles of our beaches can't be dog-friendly, so that people who want to go swimming with their dog can, and not be threatened with arrest or a hefty fine.Don't worry. There will still be plenty of dog-free beaches for people who don't want to go to a beach where dogs are present!
By utilizing the Citizen's Initiative Process in the Palm Beach County Charter, dog owners and other citizens of Palm Beach County can get this issue before the Palm Beach County Commission. If the commissioners fail to adopt the proposed changes, the issue goes before the voters in a county-wide referendum.

Being a big dog kind of girl, I have never gotten into putting my pup into little cutsy outfits. But considering the frigid cold that we have been experiencing this holiday season, I must admit, I did squeeze Beignet into one of my hoodies and she looked unbelievably cute! What I am trying to say is, I get it, sometimes there is a time and a place and it seems that during this holiday season of below 65 degrees, dolling your dog up in a warm frock might be appropriate.
While you are protecting your pooch from the elements, you don’t want expose her to chemicals hiding inside the fabric of her coat! Fact is the US spends 2 billion dollars annually on chemicals for the sole purpose of spraying cotton crops. As much as half of these chemicals are classified as “hazardous” by the World Health Organization. Once the cotton is woven into fabric, chlorine is often applied to help the fabric hold its color, then it’s topped off with even more chemicals- like formaldehyde- to help the fabric retain its (now chemically-laden) shape. I adore old-fashioned suitcases. Especially the hard-sided train cases, in which elegant ladies of the 40’s and 50’s would stash their cosmetics and dainty toiletry items. I kinda collect them. Our Mea in the paper!

Mea, our rescue, had her story published in the local paper(Happy Herald). We are proud to be able to support rescue by spreading the word about how many amazing dogs are available out there that just need good homes. Especially after all the hurricanes we've endured this year.

Here's the article:

One morning last February, a five-month old Italian Greyhound was surrendered by her owners to the local humane society with a severely injured leg. Degloved by a raccoon trap, her leg was virtually unrecognizable and she was traumatized. The doctors worked diligently to save her leg, but only time would tell if it would heal properly enough for her to use it. She spend four months in the hospital and by then all the staff knew that she was an amazing dog who just needed to find an owner who would give the love and attention that she deserved.

When Kimberly Hall, owner of The Haute Hound, a luxury pet boutique in Jupiter, met Mea, it was love at first site. Kimberly has worked closely with the humane society raising money for rescue at various events and already owns two Italian Greyhounds, Rome’ and Sicily. The doctors wanted Mea to go to someone that knew the breed because she was special needs and would always require attention for her leg. Kimberly was an ideal choice. Her dogs go to work with her and are rarely left alone. This was exactly what Mea needed.

Kimberly came to meet Mea for the first time after she had been in the hospital for two months. It was heartbreaking to see her leg all mangled and raw and her foot swollen almost three times it’s normal size. Mea was so timid and shy and hid her head on the staff member’s chest the whole time, allowing Kimberly to pet her only a few times.

A month later, Kimberly brought her two dogs to meet Mea. She was just as shy as before; cowering and quite unsure what to do as Sicily and Rome’ gave her a thorough sniffing. After they both decided she was acceptable, they went on to sniffing other things. Only then did Mea move out to sniff them, finally a breakthrough.

One month later, Mea was ready to go home! Her leg was covered in scars and a three inch long section was missing fur and muscle that would never grow back. The leg won’t bend and one toe and the pad on the bottom were missing. Mea was a very lucky girl to still have use of this leg at all. Having left the girls at home, Kimberly picked her up one bright sunny day in May and what a happy day it was. The first time Kimberly took her to the dogpark, Mea never left her lap. Now four months later, Mea is the queen of the dogpark. She runs around chasing all the other dogs and even gives her sisters a run for their money. She will then lounge contently on the grass after tiring herself out, everything all right with the world.

Once Mea settled in, Kimberly noticed that when moving around Mea would fling her leg about and usually ended up hitting someone with it on accident. Because the nails on the three remaining toes stick straight out, Kimberly named her foot, “The Claw!” Mea reigns supreme over this household brandishing “The Claw!” whenever she deems it is necessary.

Mea loves to chase the cat around the house. She has learned to sit, loves treats, and plays with her toys like they are going out of style, especially her rubber chicken. But her favorite pastimes are receiving kisses on the sides of her face and cuddling with her mom. To get to her, Mea has no qualms about walking right over her sisters to do it. “She is quite a character! I’ve never had a dog make me laugh as much as Mea does,” say Kimberly, “I never know what she’s going to do next, and she’s so smart!”

Sometimes, being that smart gets Mea into trouble. She has figured out how to get treats off the tables and steals toys out of the toy bin at Kimberly’s pet boutique. “If I see her sprinting off towards the backroom of the store, then I know something’s up.” But when Mea gives her that sweet, beguiling look, Kimberly can never stay mad.

“Rescue dogs really do know that you’ve given them a second chance at life and they are forever expressing their appreciation for it. I love all my dogs madly, but when I look at Mea, my heart swells because I know she’s been through so much and yet is able to maintain her optimism and sheer enjoyment of life. We all could take a lesson from her. I’m so glad that she came into my life.”

Well, we are so excited over here at the Haute Hound!

We just attended a pet tradeshow and bought lots of new stuff for the upcoming season. The shipments should start arriving within the month.

We did bring a couple of things back with us though. Some

beautiful hand-knitted sweaters accented with flower pins(we already sold two!) and some holiday/special occasion bandanas.
